The Bondage Blog motto is “taking pleasure in the beauty of restrained women” but I don’t hew to that exclusively. In particular, there’s a lot of bondage femdom imagery out there that’s plenty worthwhile, if you can suspend your preference for men-on-top long enough to appreciate it. One thing that’s long puzzled me is the dual service played by the word “mistress.” Linguistically it’s the female version of “master”, which mostly explains its use in BDSM. But in our actual history, it has served more often as a polite honorific for any woman of power or high status. Simultaneously, though, it saw even greater use as a synonym for “kept woman” — a form of sex worker in a long term arrangement with one usually-wealthy usually-married man. The power imbalances there were always in favor of the man, which makes it a puzzling usage of “Mistress.”
Luckily for us, the rise to prominence of commercial femdom has reclaimed most of the BDSM connotations of mistresses who are understood to be female masters. It’s true that men have been going to brothels to get dominated by women for as long as our historical records of sex work run. There’s nothing new about that. But various kinds of electronic service providers — like the femdom cam performers at Mistress World — have greatly raised the visibility of mistresses in the computer age. As, too, has the proliferation of BDSM artwork that the internet facilitates.
Of course, not all femdom BDSM requires bondage, strictly construed. Sometimes a disabling toe kick straight to the balls, delivered while your henchwoman stands by with a phone cam to film the humiliation, is perfectly sufficient to establish dominance:
One of my pet peeves in BDSM (whichever gender is dominant in any given moment) is the too-frequent belief that dominance is undermined by displays of affection. I don’t buy it and I never have. I’d argue that this mistress’s dominance over her male submissive is quite sufficient — his wrists are tied and he’s blindfolded and he dare not move if he wants that foot job to reach a pleasant conclusion.
