If you ever got a chance to talk to one of the really good phone sex operators of the 1980s or 1990s, they would tell you how much fun it was to meet every customer in his own fetish space, building a world of fantasy with words alone. The customer never knew or cared that his phone sex provider was middle aged or frumpy, in sweats or a bathrobe, with hair in curlers or shoved into a baseball cap. It didn’t matter. Fetish themed camshows aren’t impossible, or even difficult. But they do require preparation. A successful performer on a BDSM live cam site probably isn’t going to actually have a partner on cam (it happens, but not routinely) but she’ll wear some fetish gear. And, because BDSM is a group of kinky sex practices flying in formation with a double handful of visual fetishes, she may well engage in “pointless” bondage: wearing handcuffs that don’t limit her motion, or that she can take off just as easily as she put them on. The handcuffs don’t restrain her, but they look good while she’s stuffing a dildo up her carefully-depilated snatch or fingering her own asshole.

Some of these BDSM cams ladies go the extra mile, donning gags or blindfolds to go with the performative handcuffs. it’s all about what gets the tips and tokens flowing. Since my own approach to BDSM is more of a dominance-and-light-sadism thing, I don’t usually have a lot of time for self-bondage and bondage-gear-as-fashion-accessory. But I’ll make exceptions for hard-working cams performers. They’re laboring under circumstances where “real” bondage is usually impractical, they’re providing honest sexual service to fellow kinksters, and they ought (in my opinion) to be afforded a lot of leeway for making the effort.

And anyway, some of their accommodations to the constraints of their particular craft give rise to new and entertaining visual fetishes. I’m not saying that in-person BDSM play doesn’t occasionally incorporate a handcuffed woman pleasuring herself on command, but in partnered play it’s not the most frequent thing.

In kinky camshows, on the other hand, it’s really common, even expected. So much so that the “she’s handcuffed but it won’t stop her from playing with herself” arrangement has become a visual trope, possibly even (or is this just me?) a new micro-fetish.
