If I’m not mistaken, this 1927 Russian postcard by the artist Vladimir Nikolaevich Pchelin depicts the infamous noblewoman Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, aka Saltychikha (Салтычи́ха). Her fondness for beating and torturing her serfs was so extreme, she was ultimately convicted in the deaths of 38 women. But many more serfs on her estate died suspicious deaths, making her one of Russia’s most notorious serial killers. Russia didn’t have the death penalty for nobles at that time, so she wound up spending more than thirty years chained in the cellar of a Moscow convent.
