Some plots are very simple. There’s a girl, out walking her dog. Two men grab her, strip her, bind her to a fallen tree. They have a whip. They whip her. She suffers. The end.
Of course, a lot of the time, we never know why she had to suffer. Maybe there is no “why”. Maybe she is innocent and the men, cruel. Maybe she had it coming. Maybe they were paid. All we know for sure is that she was whipped, and that it hurt.
