Back when there wasn’t a lot of internet porn yet, “Japanese bondage” was its own porn category. I think they were ahead of Americans not only in making a lot of kinky porn, but also in digitizing and circulating it in formats (like optical media formats that we never saw on this side of the Pacific) that lent themselves well to being ripped when dialup BBSs and the internet came along.
