Pandering To The Fetish Audience

Every time I’ve seen the Watchmen trailer in the theater, it’s been obvious that the character in latex was costumed with the sole intent of drawing in the bondage/latex/rubber/fetish crowds. All I can say is, it’s working:

fetish pandering in the movies

The original comics actually discuss fetishism. This character and another discuss a “villain” who was actually a masochist who just tried to get heroes to beat him up. Then, the other character ends up unable to perform with her until they both dress up in their costumes. (There was also a dominatrix-dressed villainess who he kept a picture of and appeared to remember fondly…)

And that’s all stuff in the original comic book we’re talking about here… no idea how much of that makes it into the movie. Oddly, Silk Spectre’s costume here makes more practical sense than the one she wears in the comic… but kind of conflicts with the name of SILK Spectre.

I saw Watchmen this weekend and wondered if her nipples were really hard that often or if they’re sewn into the costume as male nipples are often done. Question for the ages, eh?
