“Homophobic” is one of those words that has different meanings depending on who you talk to. From its roots you would think it ought to mean “fear of gayness” and that’s generally how I use it, including here. The whole “hatred of gays” is a later gloss on the meaning, which has been used so widely it’s a legitimate alternate definition of the word now. You are of course correct that it’s possible to neither fear nor hate gay people and yet remain utterly uninterested in gay sex, but we don’t really have a better word for the active expression of such disinterest. And, as you say, one might question the motives behind such an active expression in any case.

“Homophobic” is not the right word here. You can be totally not interested in having sex with a guy under any and all circumstances, and still not hate gay people. I tend to go with the notion that most virulent homophobes, in fact, have a certain closeted interest in gay sex that drives their homophobia. If you’re entirely happy with being heterosexual, why would you care enough about gay sex to hate people who practice it?
