I have never had a problem with one not working.

Having a Good understanding of electronics and having opened the wand up, I can say that their output is almost identical and there should never be any real problem with using Violet wand probes with the neon wand (however going the opposite way could have issues due to different load handling characteristics, Id need to do more work to check.)

I wish there were a common rule of thumb, but apparently, there’s not.
