Collarsmith – thanks for the information! As a someone who does a lot of Eastern cooking, I didn’t think that looked like ginger either, however, horseradish makes complete sense. I have to agree with you – it does indeed look like fun! Maybe I will have to do some grocery shopping soon….

Just a comment on the figging set; I’m pretty sure that isn’t a hand of ginger. It looks like a horseradish root to me, which would be even nastier. I have some growing in the garden, which so far have seen only culinary use. You have to basically hold your breath while you peel and grate it. Whenever the root is cut or crushed, it triggers a reaction that makes a hot compound a lot like mustard oil. It’s the plant’s natural defense against being eaten. When it gets as hot as you can stand, you add vinegar to stop the reaction. Of course if you just peel it and let it go, it’ll keep getting hotter and hotter. It’d burn your soft tender bits pretty intensely. Looks like fun.
