It’s mostly just uncomfortable, and after a bit, you lose the feeling in your knees.
The only times it hurt were initially kneeling in the rice for a few minutes, after which the pain subsides, and picking the rice grains out of your poor, tortured skin afterwards.

Ever sat on a rough asphalt road and leant back on your hands?
It’s like that.
