Chinese Public Humiliation Stocks
This is said to be a photo from 1875 of three women enduring a “minor” judicial punishment of public humiliation in China. These communal neck stocks are pretty commonly seen in drawings of historical Chinese punishments, but an actual photograph that shows women in the stocks is pretty rare. This is the first I’ve seen:
