The woman was actually a wife of one of the vikings who was accused of being unfaithful, the ‘test’ for this was having the husband toss axes at her till all three braids were cut off. If she survived, then she must have been faithful. The husband was three sheets to the wind, so Kirk Douglas, being the ‘hero’ of the movie, steps in to save the woman with his ‘manly’ axe throwing.
