Since she was always “willing”, there was no need to really gag her, the symbolic and more esthetically pleasing was just as good, in fact better.

Why go to this trouble? Esthetics: the unwrinkled cloth gag is more visually appealing, IMHO, than a cleave gag which tightens the face into a grim rictus, or than tape alone, which sometimes shows the contour of frozen, sullen, pursed lips below the surface.

Ms. Deneuve looks very pretty in this photo, unwillingly half-veiled as she is.
