Victim Of An Audit

It’s the Fifteenth of April, which in the United States is a time of great wailing and gnashing of teeth, because personal income tax returns are due. Here’s the best anti-IRS image to appear in my mailbox this year, captioned simply “Internal Revenue Service Agents Conducting An Audit”:

tax collectors conducting an audit

Upon close scrutiny, the image actually appears to be an ancient Chinese engraving. But it wouldn’t suprise me if the caption (which you can just see at the top of the image) translates to “The Emporer’s Tax Collectors Conducting An Audit”.

Actually I think that this engraving depicts the punishment for unclean prostitutes in the Hunan province of China. Modern tax collectors are I suppose an equivalent?
